![]() One of my favourite places to visit on horribly rainy days like today is Spazio Oberdan (Viale Vittorio Veneto, 2), a modern Film Library that also serves as a museum where you can learn a bit more about the history of films shot in Milan. Its gardens are nowadays open to the public. On sunny days I take a walk in Giardini Indro Montanelli, the park in front of Galleria d'Arte Moderna and Pac, Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea, built in 1951 in the area of the old stables of the nearby Villa Belgioioso. In the area just off Piazza San Babila in the direction of Porta Venezia, in streets like Corso Venezia, Via Vivaio and Corso Monforte, there's a high concentration of Liberty buildings in addition to the famous Villa Necchi Campiglio: Palazzo Castiglioni in Corso Venezia Casa Berri-Meregalli in Via Cappuccini with its hall reminiscent of a crypt and its eclectic and mysterious style, and, close to the famous Villa Necchi Campiglio, Palazzo Fidia in via Melegari (where the filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni shot some scenes for his first feature-length movie in 1950, starring Lucia Bosè) and Casa Sola-Busca in Via Serbelloni, with its Marble Ear, once the doorphone of the building.įive years ago I moved to Porta Venezia, a district that I have come to appreciate more with each day (just a couple of underground stops from Duomo on the red line): it is a mixture of the chaotic folklore of the kasbah of the streets leading toward the railway station, the crowd and shops of the commercial boulevard Corso Buenos Aires and the charm of the new boutiques, galleries and bistros, especially in the west side. Milan is full of Stile Liberty (Art Nouveau) architecture, a style I'm totally in love with. So I started to spend a lot of time riding my bike and being amazed how many beautiful buildings you came across in the centre. And that was how I started to change my mind.įirst of all, I could say goodbye to my car and buy a bicycle after all, the distances permit it and the city is completely flat. Eventually travelling got a little too expensive for my budget and I was forced to spend more time in Milan. Initially I found it very boring here and travelled frantically across Italy, spending my free time aboard trains. Milan seemed to fit the stereotype I had always heard about: grey and cold, it was a place made for offices where you do nothing else but work during the week and wait for Friday to spend the weekend somewhere else. So when I had a chance to move to Milan to start a new exciting job at one of the most famous Italian publishing houses, I was happy but disappointed at the same time. I was born in Milan but raised in Rome, a city you can hardly compare to any other Italian city (and few cities abroad) for its beauty.
